The construction of more than 100 townhomes on vacant east Windsor property once expected to house a school received the green light from a committee of city council this week.

Without a word from would-be neighbours and with little discussion from members of the development and heritage standing committee, an Ontario numbered company was granted zoning bylaw and offical plan amendments necessary to build 117 two-storey townhomes near the corner of Beverly Glen and Florence Avenue, as well as two new right-of-ways for proposed street extensions.

Some of the more than six acres of greenspace is currently designated as “open space” and a “school site” under the city’s official plan, and is zoned as a “green district.” If city council approves the committee’s recommendations at a future meeting, the land’s designation will change to “residential neighbourhood,” and its zoning will change to residential.
